The return of Colossus and Jubilee to Russia takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Omega Red, the revived Russian super soldier with connections to Wolverine and the perilous power to siphon life energy.
Ever since his debut in Wolverine #4, Omega Red has established himself as a key adversary in Wolverine’s rogues’ gallery. The narrative unfolds over a gripping four-part saga, where the X-Men’s Blue Strike team is unwittingly pulled into one of Logan’s numerous dark secrets. The team is quickly overwhelmed when Omega Red launches a surprise attack at the conclusion of the opening issue.
Omega Red is endowed with a remarkable array of abilities, such as extraordinary strength, speed, and resilience. His signature weapon is his extendable bone tentacles, crafted from the radioactive substance Carbonadium, which he employs to extract the life essence from his targets. This renders him an especially tough challenge for Wolverine, whose regenerative capabilities are severely tested by Omega Red’s vampiric talents.
The feud between Wolverine and Omega Red is the stuff of comic book legend, rooted in the tension of the Cold War era. Their initial clash saw Wolverine’s squad, Team X, nabbing the Carbonadium Synthesizer, a key to Omega Red’s power management. This pivotal moment laid the groundwork for a complex enmity that has only deepened over time.
Omega Red’s distinctive look, with his ghostly white complexion and crimson eyes, sets him apart in Wolverine’s gallery of adversaries. His menacing yet unforgettable appearance has cemented his status as a fan favorite.
Omega Red is not your run-of-the-mill villain; he’s a multifaceted character. Once a soldier who perpetrated vile acts, he also fell prey to the Soviet Super-Soldier Program, which turned him into a cyborg. This conflict within him enriches his narrative, painting him as more than a mere foe. In the end, it’s his commanders who pull the strings, and given the chance, he wouldn’t hesitate to turn against them.
The clashes between Omega Red and Wolverine are nothing short of epic. Omega Red has nearly bested Wolverine multiple times and even succeeded in one alternate storyline. These thrilling showdowns have firmly established Omega Red as one of Wolverine’s most formidable adversaries.
After a harrowing fall, Professor X and Magneto emerge from the water, only to be attacked by a T-Rex. Magneto cleverly uses a geyser to fend off the dinosaur.
Meanwhile, in Russia, ex-Soviet soldiers unleash Omega Red from his cryogenic prison. Russian generals debate the wisdom of reviving the Soviet Union and Omega Red’s release, just as Darkstar announces Omega’s awakening.
In New York, Jubilee faces an ambush by the Friends of Humanity but is rescued by Colossus, who seeks the X-Men’s aid after his family is displaced by soldiers under Omega Red’s command. Leaving a note for her absent teammates, Jubilee departs with Colossus. Flying to Russia, they discover devastation, with Colossus’s family farm destroyed and his sister Illyana hiding from the soldiers. Omega Red, meanwhile, coerces Russian leaders to relinquish power. Back at the X-Mansion, Wolverine spots Jubilee’s note and sets out for Russia, ready to confront an old adversary.
In a daring rescue attempt, Jubilee, Colossus, and Illyana set out to liberate the Rasputins, only to be confronted by the menacing Omega Red, who captures Illyana and threatens her life. Just in time, Wolverine enters the fray, engaging Omega Red in combat, a foe who recognizes the mutant instantly. The team battles Omega Red, eventually managing to escape, and Wolverine shares his history with Omega Red, revealing the villain’s origins in a Soviet Super Soldier Program from the Cold War era.
Meanwhile, Rogue, Storm, and Gambit join the fight, heeding Jubilee’s call, and Colossus leads a small force against Omega Red and the Soviet soldiers. The conflict escalates as the Soviets deploy tanks, but Darkstar, having defected, aids the heroes in evacuating civilians. Despite Rogue’s valiant efforts, Omega Red overpowers her. Darkstar proposes a strategy: for Storm to invoke a severe chill to force Omega Red back into stasis. The plan succeeds, and Omega Red is subdued.
In the aftermath, Colossus assists his family in repairing their farm and, despite being offered a return to the X-Men, he declines, choosing family over the team.

Charles and Magnus find themselves in the Savage Land, a prehistoric hideaway tucked away in Antarctica. This locale debuted in Marvel Mystery Comics #22 back in 1941 but didn’t snag its ‘Savage’ title until the X-Men popped in during Uncanny X-Men #10.
Magneto, ever the busybody, took a ‘vacation’ there in Uncanny X-Men #62-63, whipped up some Mutates, and played king of the hill until the X-Men crashed his party, prompting his hasty exit stage left.
Omega Red, everyone’s favourite chilly villain, makes his grand entrance from a deep freeze in X-Men #4, courtesy of Matsu’o Tsurayaba and his lofty Upstart ambitions. He is a result of a Russian attempt to match Captain America, and Cap’s image is seen on a screen during the flashback sequences.
In Russia, government troops are sporting the latest in ‘invade-the-capital’ chic, identical to Alexei Vazhin’s fashion-forward goons from X-Men #17-19, where they turned a family reunion into a tragedy and snatched Illyana for her mutant mojo. Jubilee’s wardrobe choice? Also from that arc.

Colossus, MIA since The Unstoppable Juggernaut, gives us a peek into his mutant debut and sister-saving heroics from Giant-Size X-Men #1. Fast forward, and she’s Magik, Limbo’s top teleporting demon sorceress. Colossus makes a cameo in the final episode Graduation Day.
Omega Red and Wolverine share a history of less-than-friendly encounters, including a ‘waste not, want not’ policy on Logan’s pals back in their Team X days, as seen in Weapon X, Lies and Videotape – though Logan’s memory seems to have had a wardrobe malfunction.
Darkstar flits between teams but mostly chills with the Winter Guard, though she did clock in some time with the X-Corps in New X-Men #130. It didn’t end well.
While Storm never got her hands on Omega Red in the early days, Rogue sure did, and their tussle was quite the spectacle. Ororo will get her shot again in A Deal with the Devil.
