In a standout episode, the X-Men series delves deeper into the realm of science fiction with the introduction of a unique alien menace.
The narrative unfolds with the emergence of the Spirit Drinker, an extra-terrestrial entity unleashed from its spacecraft confines. It begins a terrifying campaign, sapping the life force from anyone in its path, including The Reavers, Lady Deathstrike, and Jubilee. Far from a mere mindless beast, the Spirit Drinker is portrayed as a malevolent force, ensnaring the consciousness of its prey in a state of unending torment. Its vulnerability lies in two substances: adamantium and electricity, with the latter playing a pivotal role in its eventual downfall. The presence of this alien horror adds a chilling new dimension to the episode, compelling the X-Men to battle an adversary that is not only elusive but also profoundly evil.
This encounter with the Spirit Drinker is woven into the broader tapestry of the X-Men’s interactions with alien life forms. The mystery deepens with the X-Men’s ignorance of the alien ship’s provenance, though avid comic readers will discern the hand of the Shi’ar Empire. The episode concludes with Professor Xavier’s premonition of the Phoenix Saga‘s onset, foreshadowing epic space-faring escapades and formidable challenges ahead. Such hints are a hallmark of the series’ intricate storytelling, crafting elaborate cosmic plots that push the team to their limits.
In the aftermath of Lady Deathstrike‘s attack on the ship, a mysterious green light spills out, heralding the arrival of the Spirit Drinker. This entity begins to siphon the life force from the Reavers, sparing only Deathstrike. The X-Men, faced with this new threat, decide to withdraw, with Gambit volunteering to cover their escape. However, Jubilee heroically steps in to save Gambit, becoming the Drinker’s next victim.
Meanwhile, Professor X, from his mansion, keeps a watchful eye on the unfolding events through Cerebro. Wolverine carries Jubilee’s lifeless form as they retreat. Elsewhere, Beast is interrupted during an art lecture by a summons from Xavier, just as Cyclops and Jean Grey‘s date is cut short by a similar call to action.
The X-Men regroup in the sewers, realizing the dire need to defeat the Drinker to save Jubilee. Gambit’s attempt to bury the creature under rubble is unsuccessful. He escapes with Jubilee while Wolverine and Deathstrike engage the Drinker, which results in Deathstrike being drained. Just in time, Cyclops, Jean, Professor X, and Beast join the fray. The Drinker eludes them, leading Xavier and Beast to its crashed prison ship. Xavier, shocked, deciphers the alien script, uncovering the ship’s true purpose.
In a united effort, the X-Men drive the Drinker onto the subway’s electrified third rail, destroying it and freeing the souls it captured. Jubilee and Deathstrike regain consciousness, and amidst the chaos, Xavier has a premonition of the Phoenix Force and the cosmic figures Lilandra and D’Ken Neramani.

The nefarious Spirit Drinker rears its ugly head, a nod to the Soul-Eater summoned by D’Ken in the classic Uncanny X-Men #107. This cameo serves as a tantalizing teaser for the epic five-part Phoenix Saga that’s about to unfold.
Sidney, the chatty waiter who bids Jean and Scott adieu after their date goes awry, is a cheeky homage to Sidney Iwanter, a FOX bigwig of the era.
As for the Reavers and the formidable Lady Deathstrike, they bid adieu to the series, while their boss and brainchild, Donald Pierce, gears up for a debut during the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Let’s not overlook Hank’s one-sided convo with Charles, a subtle clue that all’s not well with the Professor. Indeed, the next episode reveals his sleep has been anything but peaceful. The episode’s cliff-hanger? A fiery title card promising the imminent arrival of The Phoenix Saga. Stay tuned, folks!
