Hindsight (Part 1), the exciting opener for Wolverine and the X-Men, debuted in January 2009, setting a captivating tone for the series. It kicks off with Wolverine parting ways with his allies at Xavier’s Mansion, only to be followed by a mysterious psionic assault on Xavier and Jean Grey.
The story boldly jumps ahead, revealing a mix of comic book and movie lore. Amidst a world brimming with anti-mutant hostility, a Gestapo-esque force known as the Mutant Response Division (MRD) emerges.
As the narrative unfolds, Wolverine finds himself powerless when the MRD detains a family he saved from a train disaster for aiding a mutant. This dire situation drives Wolverine to seek out Beast at the devastated X-Mansion.
Skilfully interweaving elements from the X-Men film series and iconic comic arcs, the episode captivates from start to finish, culminating in Wolverine’s determination to reunite the X-Men.
This premiere episode is a robust gateway into the world of the X-Men and its ensemble, tailored for a younger demographic with its mindful exclusion of intense violence. Yet, it remains an essential view for any X-Men enthusiast, delivering a riveting and enjoyable adventure.
In the high-stakes environment of the Danger Room, Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, and Colossus engage in intense training. Their session takes a dramatic turn when they find themselves captured, only to discover Logan overseeing the operation. His challenging training scenario serves as an unexpected goodbye gift. Logan’s departure from Xavier‘s Mansion stirs a wave of emotions among its inhabitants. In a shocking twist, a devastating psychic attack leads to an explosion, resulting in Jean and Charles being missing and feared dead.
A year passes, and Logan is haunted by these events, replaying them in his dreams. His reality is shaken by a train disaster from which he saves a young girl from a fiery RV. The girl’s family welcomes Logan, but their act of kindness is betrayed by a man named Carl, who reports them to the Mutant Response Division (MRD).
Memories of the mansion’s explosion torment Logan, and in a moment of panic, he unsheathes his claws, just as armed forces storm the family’s home. Accused of sheltering a fugitive mutant, the family is detained, prompting Wolverine to leap into action against the intruders.
Logan’s journey leads him back to the remnants of Xavier Mansion, where he finds Beast immersed in his research. Sharing the grim reality of the MRD’s crackdown, Logan enlists Beast’s aid to orchestrate a daring rescue. Together, they storm the MRD facility, liberating the captives and fleeing via helicopter.
In the serene seclusion of a mountain cabin, Logan reassures the family that the MRD’s pursuit will soon wane. Yet, the ruins of the mansion beckon him back to confer with Beast on the MRD’s aggressive stance and the looming conflict. With a sense of urgency, Logan advocates for the reassembly of the X-Men, ready to face the challenges ahead.

In the show’s opening sequence, two members of the Power Pack make a surprise appearance, setting the stage alongside the main team to a riff on the iconic X-Men melody. Wolverine’s showdown with the Sentinel echoes his Danger Room heroics from X-Men: The Last Stand.
The trio honing their skills in the Danger Room are no strangers to the British X-Men offshoot, Excalibur, within the comic book realm.
The X-Mansion’s history of destruction spans various formats: it faced obliteration in X-Men: Apocalypse, endured multiple demolitions across the animated series, including X-Men ’97, and most recently in the Planet X comic storyline.
Coinciding with the release of this series, the Mutant Response Division (MRD) found its way into the comic pages of X-Force #17.
Mutants Rockslide, Boom Boom, Dust, Wolfsbane, and Pyro manage a daring escape from confinement.
In the comic book issue Uncanny X-Men #279, Professor Xavier utilizes a comparable access panel to enter the subterranean complex beneath the school. Similarly, Logan employs a building in the same manner as he did the elevator shaft in the film X-Men: The Last Stand.
Magneto governs Genosha, reflecting his enduring role as ruler in the comic series.
The scarred MRD Soldier bears a resemblance to Malcolm Concord from Weapon X and Carl Denti from X-Men ‘97.
Trish Tilby makes a brief appearance on the news broadcast.
