Hunting Grounds throws us back into the chaotic world of Mojo, the infamous villain with a penchant for warping reality TV. In a bold move, he abducts Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch, forcing them into gladiatorial combat for his audience’s delight.
The episode thrives on the electric chemistry between Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch. As they grapple with their dire circumstances, their alliance forms the heart of the narrative, delivering thrilling sequences as they tackle the obstacles thrown their way.
The stakes skyrocket when Mojo imprisons them in an aquatic dome, making their fight for survival the episode’s gripping centerpiece. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and ingenuity in the face of adversity.
Moreover, the episode probes the dark underbelly of entertainment and exploitation. Mojo’s obsession with reality TV and his use of mutants as pawns shine a spotlight on the darker aspects of media influence and the objectification of those with extraordinary abilities. It challenges the audience to reflect on the moral implications of consuming entertainment built on the suffering of others.
Trapped in a Genoshan cell, Nightcrawler finds comfort in Wanda‘s visits. But when Spiral abducts them, Magneto‘s wrath is unleashed, and he commands a search for the duo.
Awakening in a serene forest, Nightcrawler and Wanda are ambushed by the Reavers, pawns in Spiral’s vengeful plot and Mojo‘s ratings game. They soon realize their woodland haven is a dome, with the ocean’s abyss beyond. United, they fend off the Reavers and outwit their captors, until Mojo ups the ante with a new predator.
At the X-Men‘s base, Wolverine‘s absence is marked only by signs of struggle. Cerebro offers no clues. Meanwhile, under the dome, a brainwashed, feral Wolverine confronts Nightcrawler and Wanda.
Kurt spots a potential escape through a drain and confronts Wolverine, but Mojo floods the dome in desperation. Kurt’s quick thinking frees Logan from Mojo’s control, though he falls unconscious.
As they open the drain, Wanda’s almost allows Wolverine to drown, but she plunges after Logan into the water. The trio surfaces, outmanoeuvring Mojo, who retreats at Spiral’s behest.
Reflecting on their ordeal, Wanda shares her fears of resembling her father too closely. Magneto, acknowledging the X-Men’s aid, permits a peaceful departure from Genosha.

Mojo refers to Wanda as “the love of Nightcrawler’s life,” a claim that Kurt quickly refutes. In the comics, an alternate version of Kurt and Wanda have a daughter named Talia, who becomes Nocturne and briefly joins Excalibur and the Exiles teams.
The motif of Mojo capturing people and coercing them into his games is not new and echoes the events of the X-Men episode Longshot. In fact, Mojo confines his adversaries within a dome, as seen in Uncanny X-Men #461.
This particular episode features Wolverine in a brainwashing harness, which is reminiscent of his android clone, Albert, from the comics.
Additionally, Spiral and Wolverine’s confrontation is a nod to their battles in the comics, especially highlighted in The Crunch Conundrum storyline that spans Wolverine #51-53.
