There’s a whisper that Nightcrawler has been seen on a ship traveling to Genosha. In this episode, Kurt Wagner, the teleporting mutant with a swashbuckling spirit, emerges from the shadows. His return sparks curiosity and concern among the X-Men. What has brought Nightcrawler back? And what secrets lie aboard that mysterious ship?
As Kurt navigates this new chapter, the episode flashes back to his early years – fleeing from one repressive German village to another. We witness the moment when Professor Xavier first saved young Nightcrawler from a harsh environment. Now, Kurt’s present-day efforts involve protecting the passengers of mutant-smuggling ships, using his teleportation powers to provide necessities that their transporters neglect.
X-Calibre reintroduces Nightcrawler – a character whose odd powers are both a gift and a burden. Animation captures his agility, his sense of duty, and the shadows that cling to him. Nightcrawler’s return adds depth to the X-Men’s struggle, and his presence hints at a larger mystery – one that intertwines past and present.
News ripples through the mutant community – a sighting of Nightcrawler aboard a ship bound for Genosha. The X-Men, ever vigilant, mobilize to find their elusive comrade. But Nightcrawler’s voyage is no ordinary cruise. He shares the vessel with a motley crew of fellow mutants: Squidboy, Dazzler, Pixie, Feral, and others. Their destination? The fabled Genosha – a haven or a trap?
Yet, lurking in the murky depths, danger awaits. Pirates descend upon the ship, their true identities veiled. These “pirates” are no swashbuckling buccaneers; they are Spiral and the Reavers, mercenaries seeking high-level mutants for a sinister purpose – Mojo’s twisted entertainment.
In the dead of night, chaos erupts. The pirates strike, threatening the mutants’ passage to Genosha. The crew panics as the ship veers off course. But Nightcrawler, agile and resolute, confronts the marauders. His teleportation powers become a weapon, and he defeats the attackers.
Enter the cavalry: Wolverine, Beast, Shadowcat and Forge. They arrive to retrieve Nightcrawler, wanting to whisk him back to the X-Mansion. But Nightcrawler hesitates. His loyalty lies not with the X-Men alone; it extends to his fellow mutants. He declines their offer, determined to ensure their safe arrival on Genosha.
As dawn breaks, the ship sails toward its destiny. The Reavers retreat, thwarted by Nightcrawler’s valour. But the X-Men remain vigilant. Nightcrawler’s decision echoes – a pledge to remain allied with both sides, bridging the gap between loyalty and duty.

Sammy Pare, better known as Squidboy, debuted in Uncanny X-Men #410, quickly becoming notable for his friendship with Juggernaut and significantly contributing to the villain’s transformation into an X-Men ally. Squidboy’s death at the hands of Black Tom Cassidy led to a vengeful confrontation as Juggernaut turned against his one-time comrade.
Flashbacks reveal Kurt’s initial encounter with Professor X in Germany, where he was rescued from a hostile crowd. These moments are reminiscent of the first scenes in Giant-Size X-Men #1, marking Nightcrawler’s introduction. This event was paid tribute to in the ’90s animated series episode titled Nightcrawler. During this period, Kurt donned an X-Men uniform briefly seen around Uncanny X-Men #444, as part of Storm’s XSE team. His love of pirate movies starring Errol Flynn is also well known.
Spiral appears, commanding the Reavers, with members Bonebreaker and Skull-Buster in tow. The elusive Mojo is hinted at throughout, with plans to indulge his fixation on the X-Men, especially Nightcrawler, in the episode Hunting Grounds.
The vessel is christened Avalon, likely referencing Magneto’s space station from the comic series.
The Reaver named Ricochet, attached to the Reavers’ vessel, is actually Spiral’s earlier incarnation, ‘Ricochet’ Rita Wayward, a stuntwoman caught in Mojo’s manipulative schemes, creating a complex paradox. Unbeknownst to both, they are the same person caught in a cycle of manipulation.
