In this critical chapter, attention turns to Genosha, an imagined island nation near Africa’s coast. Initially, Genosha appears as a bleak mutant labour camp, with the Mutant Control Agency enforcing the construction of Sentinels – robots designed to hunt mutants. Central to this operation is a dam, serving as the power source for the Sentinel production.
Storm, Jubilee, and Gambit are lured to the island by its false promise of sanctuary for mutants. Their dreams are crushed when they are enslaved and stripped of their powers by inhibitor collars, turning the promised refuge into a prison of forced labour.
Genosha’s tale is woven deeply into the X-Men saga, representing the fight for mutant rights and freedom against tyranny. It gains a new chapter when Magneto frees Genosha, making it a bastion for mutants to live and oppose their adversaries.
Genosha stands as a powerful symbol in X-Men lore, embodying endurance, sacrifice and the quest for equality. Its story continues to resonate, assuring fans and newcomers alike that hope can emerge from the bleakest situations.
Storm, Gambit and Jubilee are forced into slave labour after waking up in a detention centre on Genosha, wearing collars which nullify their powers. They are forced into helping to build a dam along with the other captured mutants. Their host is Dr. Bolivar Trask. Their collars are switched off when they are put into work and Storm immediately tries to escape when hers is deactivated. However, straight after she starts to fly into the air, her collar is switched on. Trask orders a Sentinel to kill but Gambit steps in and persuades Trask into thinking that Storm could be useful for providing water once the dam is finished.
As the mutants go to work on building the dam, they notice a fire in the nearby forest. Guards are sent to apprehend the person responsible and the mutants are sent back to their cells. That night, a power cut makes the mutant detention centre lose all power and Jubilee manages to breakout of her cell. She tries to rally Gambit and the other mutants in an escape attempt but none will join her.
Upon Wolverine‘s return to the mansion, he discovers the X-Men are unable to reach their comrades on Genosha. They resolve to rescue them, yet Professor X abstains, opting instead to make a confidential call to Dr. MacTaggert at the Muir Island Research Centre.
Meanwhile, in Genosha, Jubilee is startled awake to find Gambit missing. She and the other imprisoned mutants concur on her plan to escape, but a surprise ambush by guards, forewarned by Gambit, thwarts their attempt. The mutants are escorted back to their cells, except for Jubilee, who is confined with Storm in a cramped cell. Despite her claustrophobia-induced delirium, Storm clings to the hope that Gambit will come to their rescue.
Inside a factory, Trask unveils the Master Mold, a colossal Sentinel that manufactures robots, to Henry Peter Gyrich, as well as the Leader of Genosha and Cameron Hodge, the Development Advisor to the Genoshan Government. The dam is under construction to supply power to Master Mold, who is draining excessive energy from Genosha’s power grid. Gyrich interrogates Gambit about the X-Men, and Gambit agrees to lead him to them in exchange for his freedom. However, Gambit escapes and encounters Cable, a heavily armed man who helps him evade the guards and provides him with a key to unlock the power-dampening collars.
Cable was once a mercenary under the Leader’s command but left upon realizing the Leader’s lack of commitment to democracy. Suspected of being a mutant, Cable has now become a target for Gyrich, who negotiates with the Leader for a supply of power-dampening collars in exchange for dealing with Cable. The negotiation is abruptly interrupted when Cable launches an assault on the factory.
Gambit liberates Storm and Jubilee, enabling them to release the imprisoned mutants from their confines. Amidst the chaos, Storm conjures a fierce thunderstorm, unleashing torrential rains that lead to the dam’s collapse. Overcome by her exertions, Storm collapses, only to be caught and carried to safety by Rogue, who arrives just in time with the other X-Men.
In a desperate bid for freedom, the Leader and Hodge attempt to flee to Switzerland, but their escape is thwarted when Cable detonates their vehicle. As Cable confronts the Leader, Hodge aims a gun at him, but their standoff is interrupted by a deluge from the shattered dam, prompting Cable to laugh as the waters engulf them. Trapped within the factory, Master Mold struggles to evade the flood, hindered by his connection to the facility, which is ultimately consumed by the wave.
Having survived the ordeal, the X-Men flee Genosha and return to their home, only to discover the ruins of their once grand mansion.
