Weapon X, Lies and Videotape is an X-Men episode that delves deep into the murky waters of Wolverine’s past, revealing the complexities and traumas that have shaped him into the fierce yet tortured hero we know. The episode begins with Wolverine receiving a package containing co-ordinates, which leads him down a rabbit hole of forgotten memories and dark secrets. As Wolverine watches the tape, he is confronted with haunting images and snippets of his past, specifically his time with the Weapon X program—a clandestine project responsible for his adamantium skeleton.
The central theme of this episode is the impact of implanted memories on one’s sense of self. Wolverine’s struggle with these distorted memories showcases how our perceptions of reality can be manipulated, leading to identity crises and emotional turmoil. Throughout the episode, Wolverine grapples with the unsettling realization that many of his memories might have been fabricated or altered by the sinister forces behind Weapon X. This uncertainty not only fuels his rage and frustration but also deepens his vulnerability, as he questions the authenticity of his past experiences and the motivations of those around him.
As Wolverine attempts to piece together the fragments of his past, he is forced to confront the painful truth about the nature of his existence and the extent of the experimentation he endured. The episode expertly weaves in themes of trust, betrayal, and the search for identity, highlighting Wolverine’s enduring quest for self-discovery. By examining the effects of memory manipulation, Weapon X, Lies and Videotape adds a layer of psychological depth to Wolverine’s character, making his journey all the more compelling and relatable. This episode is a must-watch for fans who want to explore the darker, more introspective aspects of Wolverine’s story, as it not only delivers intense action but also provides a thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche.
Wolverine is thrust into a nightmarish flashback where he and Silver Fox are attacked by Sabretooth in a log cabin. The intensity of the dream makes him thrash around violently in his sleep, causing concern among the other X-Men. Professor X attempts to use his telepathic powers to calm Wolverine, but a sudden shock jolts the mutant awake. Wolverine springs out of bed, jumps into his jeep, and speeds off into the night. Jean Grey, trying to piece together what’s happening, discovers a recently delivered photo of Silver Fox along with a map and coordinates.
Wolverine arrives at the desolate Weapon X facility, which triggers a flood of painful memories from his time there. He realizes that someone has been tampering with his mind. Beast soon joins him, hoping to provide some comfort and clarity. It becomes apparent that Wolverine’s mind is plagued with memories of being trained as a killer. The tension heightens when Sabretooth arrives, revealing that he too received a mysterious letter and coordinates. Sabretooth accuses Wolverine of orchestrating this setup, sparking a fierce confrontation.
As the two mutants clash, they are bombarded with shared flashbacks of battling Omega Red and Sabretooth abandoning his comrades. The situation takes a twist when Silver Fox and Maverick arrive at the facility. Silver Fox reveals that Weapon X has been manipulating their memories. The group realizes that their flashbacks were implanted and staged, causing them to question the authenticity of their past experiences. Sabretooth, in particular, starts to wonder if his childhood memories of being beaten by his father are real or fabricated.
Beast stumbles upon a computer that reveals a disturbing truth: the four mutants were subjected to hypnotic suggestion, turning them into sleeper agents to be activated and summoned back to Weapon X. The group discovers a door that requires the combined DNA of Wolverine, Sabretooth, Silver Fox, and Maverick to unlock. Inside, they find a video message detailing the release of a robot named Talos, programmed to eliminate the former Weapon X operatives.
Talos is unleashed on the mutants, but they manage to destroy it. However, the relief is short-lived as they learn there are multiple Talos robots programmed to continue the hunt. A powerful mental blast incapacitates the Weapon X operatives, but Beast manages to save everyone just before the facility explodes. In the aftermath, the four former operatives split up and go their separate ways, each burdened with the knowledge of their manipulated pasts.

Sabretooth’s attack on Silver Fox is from her first appearance in Wolverine #10, where the scene with the birthday cake is presented as one of Wolverine’s memories. Silver Fox and Maverick were the ‘friends of mine’ that Logan said Creed had killed in Deadly Reunions. Sabretooth was last seen in Cold Vengeance. The attack was also represented in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The robot Talos is based on the same character named Shiva in the Dreams of Gore storyline from Wolverine #48-51, upon which most of this episode is based on, along with Wolverine #61-62.
The photos that Jean finds in Logan’s drawer are of Heather Hudson from Repo Man and a pre-Deathstrike Yuriko from Out of the Past. Her father, Professor Oyama, is also mentioned in this episode. The ripped picture of Jean may be the same one he slashed in Captive Hearts, which inspired the popular meme.
We’ve seen bits of the Weapon X facility in flashbacks before, mostly in the episodes mentioned above. There’s also a scene from Out of the Past that shows Logan on a mission with Maverick and kidnapped by the Weapon X operatives, hence why Logan mentions that “I wasn’t taken in a parking lot!”
