X-Treme Measures takes viewers on a gripping journey into the hidden world of the Morlocks. The episode introduces this intriguing group of mutants who live beneath the streets of Bayville, shunning the surface world that has rejected them. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the diverse ways mutants adapt to a society that fears and misunderstands them. The plot thickens as Spyke, one of the X-Men’s own, finds himself drawn to the Morlocks, leading to significant character development for the young mutant.
The episode begins with Spyke experiencing increasing difficulties managing his powers, which are becoming more aggressive and difficult to control. This struggle culminates in an encounter with the Morlocks, a group of mutants with their own unique abilities and challenges. Led by Callisto, the Morlocks offer Spyke a sense of belonging and understanding that he struggles to find among the X-Men. This new alliance prompts Spyke to reconsider his place within the X-Men and his identity as a mutant, highlighting the episode’s central themes of acceptance and self-discovery.
As Spyke integrates with the Morlocks, viewers are treated to a deeper understanding of his character and the internal conflicts he faces. His journey with the Morlocks serves as a catalyst for growth, pushing him to confront his fears and insecurities. The dynamic between Spyke and the Morlocks also sheds light on the broader theme of mutant acceptance and the various ways mutants cope with their circumstances. While the X-Men strive for coexistence with humans, the Morlocks represent a different approach, one rooted in isolation and mutual support within their own community.
The mutants known as the Morlocks break into a gym to destroy equipment. A security guard is paralyzed by a mutant girl, allowing the Morlocks to escape. The next morning, Guy Spear, the owner, decides to boost security instead of calling the cops to avoid bad publicity for his new sports drink, Pow-R8.
At Bayville High, Kitty is eager to practice driving with a licensed driver. Evan is pranked by some kids but befriends Andrew Black, who admires his mutant abilities. After school, Evan is attacked by thugs, but he uses his spikes to defend himself, and Kurt teleports him away.
At the Institute, Xavier assigns Jean and Scott a mission, but Logan takes over, leading to a chaotic driving lesson with Kitty. Evan struggles with his mutation, which is advancing rapidly. During a skate competition, Callisto warns Evan that Pow-R8 is poisonous to mutants, but he drinks it anyway and suffers severe effects.
The X-Men contain the damage caused by Evan’s out-of-control spikes, and Callisto takes him to the Morlocks. Beast discovers that Pow-R8 is toxic to mutants. In the sewers, Evan learns about the Morlocks and their struggle with Pow-R8 pollution. He agrees to help them sabotage Spear’s factory.
The Morlocks cause damage at the factory, but security intervenes, leading to a fight. The X-Men arrive just in time to save the Morlocks from a tidal wave of Pow-R8. Xavier confronts Spear about the drink’s toxicity, but Spear claims ignorance. Evan decides to stay with the Morlocks, feeling accepted among them.
Back at the Institute, Kitty drives Xavier home, much to his horror. Spear plans to resume full production of Pow-R8, seeing its increased value.

Although most of the Morlocks in this episode are new creations for the series, Callisto, Caliban and Scaleface are all from the original comics.
Evan mutates further in this episode, unable to retract his bones or control their growth. This is similar to a process from the comics, called a secondary mutation, where a mutant’s power can evolve them into a new state. In the case of Emma Frost, it turned her diamond to protect her, and a secondary mutation was also responsible for many of Beast’s different looks over the decades.
Pow-R8 has the effect of poisoning mutants and also causing their powers to lose control. In Evan’s case, he loses control of his projectiles. This is similar to some power-enhancing drugs in the comics, such as Rave or Kick, or the main symptoms of the Legacy Virus.
Once again Ray’s former past as a Morlock is referred to, as in the comics.
Evan leaves the regular cast and the team in this episode, but will return…
