PERSONAL NOTES OF CHARLES XAVIER
“There are few stories within our halls as tragic and as remarkable as that of Laura Kinney. She was not born in the conventional sense, but rather created—an experiment, a weapon forged from the genetic material of Logan himself. The Facility, in their relentless pursuit of control, sought to replicate Wolverine’s abilities, but their efforts yielded something far more complex than they anticipated. A child, not merely a clone, but a living, breathing soul with thoughts, emotions, and a will of her own.
Her upbringing was devoid of warmth, stripped of the tenderness that every child deserves. Instead, she was conditioned, trained with ruthless efficiency, and subjected to unspeakable cruelty. Her handlers ensured that she knew nothing but obedience, her mind shackled by their manipulations. The most insidious of their tools was the trigger scent—an odorous command that would send her into a berserker rage, forcing her to kill without hesitation, without mercy. It was through this method that they ensured her loyalty, and through this method that they robbed her of choice.
But even the most carefully laid plans can unravel. Laura, despite the conditioning, despite the years of torment, found within herself the strength to break free. Her escape was not without bloodshed, nor without loss. The one person who had shown her kindness, Dr. Sarah Kinney, fell victim to the very monster they had created. And yet, in her final moments, she gave Laura something invaluable—a name. A name that would serve as a tether to her humanity, a reminder that she was more than just X-23.
Freedom, however, was not the salvation she might have hoped for. The world beyond the Facility was harsh, indifferent to the struggles of a lost girl. She wandered, surviving as best she could, navigating the shadows of society with the instincts of a predator and the heart of a child yearning for something more. It was inevitable that she would seek out Logan, the man whose DNA had shaped her existence. Their meeting was fraught with uncertainty, but in time, he became more than just a genetic predecessor—he became family.
The X-Men welcomed her, though acceptance was not immediate nor effortless. She had been forged in violence, and trust was a currency she had never learned to trade. But slowly, through patience and understanding, she carved a place for herself among us. She fought alongside her peers, not as a weapon, but as a warrior with agency, with purpose. She learned what it meant to choose her battles, to fight not because she was commanded, but because she believed in something greater than herself.
Laura’s journey is one of resilience, of defiance against the forces that sought to define her. She is proof that even the most broken among us can find healing, that even those shaped for destruction can forge their own path. She is not merely X-23. She is Laura Kinney. And she is, in every sense, one of us.”

Laura Kinney, known as X-23, was created in 2018 as part of the Transigen Project, alongside other mutant children engineered from genetic samples. Her biological father was Wolverine, and like him, she possessed a healing factor and retractable claws—though only her claws were coated in adamantium, leaving her skeleton untouched. The children were intended to be soldiers, but after the success of X-24, they were deemed failures and marked for termination.
With the help of sympathetic nurses, Laura and the other children escaped, seeking refuge in Eden, a supposed safe haven for mutants in North Dakota. Laura was taken in by Gabriela Lopez, who sought Logan’s help in getting her to safety. However, Gabriela was killed by the Reavers, forcing Laura to flee with Logan and Charles Xavier. Their journey north was fraught with danger, as they were relentlessly pursued by the Reavers and X-24, leading to Xavier’s tragic death.
Upon reaching North Dakota, Laura and Logan found a small group of children led by Rictor. The night before their planned escape across the border, Logan told Laura he would not be joining them, believing that his presence only brought harm to those he cared about. Though hurt, Laura accepted his decision.
The next day, as the children attempted to cross into Canada, the Reavers attacked. Laura fought alongside Logan to protect them, ultimately facing X-24. When X-24 mortally wounded Logan, Laura killed him with an adamantium bullet. She stayed with Logan in his final moments, comforting him as he died. As a tribute, she turned the cross on his grave sideways, forming an “X” to honour him as the last of the X-Men, before continuing her journey with the other children (Logan).
In the Void, a place for individuals untethered from time by the TVA, a version of Laura assembled a group of heroes, including Blade, Gambit, Elektra and the Human Torch to battle the force of villain Cassandra Nova.
At some point, Laura encounter variations of Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and her generic father Logan. Laura and her team aided them in infiltrating Nova’s base and as a reward, Laura and Logan were allowed to return to Deadpool’s home reality for their aid in saving reality (Deadpool & Wolverine].
X-MEN: EVOLUTION

FIRST APPEARANCE: X-23
VOICED BY: Andrea Libman; Britt Irvin
X-23, a clone of Logan Howlett, was created by HYDRA in an attempt to surpass Wolverine. From the moment of her creation, she was subjected to brutal isolation, deprived of normal human interaction, and conditioned to be a lethal operative. Her training instilled in her a cold, calculating nature, devoid of sympathy or empathy. Over the years, she became exactly what HYDRA intended – an efficient and ruthless weapon [X-23; Target X].
Upon encountering Logan, she directed her resentment toward him, blaming him for the suffering she endured, despite his complete ignorance of her existence. However, beneath her hardened exterior, traces of emotion remained, deeply repressed but never entirely extinguished. Deborah Risman, the scientist behind her creation, acknowledged that she had to introduce a genetic variation, which resulted in X-23 being a female clone rather than an exact replica of Logan. A vision of the future showed that one day she would join her father in the X-Men [Ascension].
WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN

FIRST APPEARANCE: Stolen Lives
VOICED BY: Tara Strong
Laura Kinney, known as X-23, was created as a female clone of Logan, inheriting his regenerative abilities and adamantium claws – two in her hands and one in each foot, a design choice meant to “ensure his legacy.” Raised within Weapon X, she was conditioned to be a superior version of Wolverine, possessing all his strengths but stripped of emotional attachment.
During the destruction of the Weapon X base, the Professor informed her that the location had been compromised and moved her just as Wolverine and Mystique fought to free Kristie Nord. When Wolverine attempted to pursue the Professor, X-23 prepared to fight him, but was ordered to stand down. As the base exploded, she watched from a helicopter, her fate uncertain [Stolen Lives].
Years later, Wolverine encountered four clones of a much older X-23, one of whom he referred to as Laura, possibly the original. These clones, though powerful allies against Master Mold, displayed an aggressive nature. When Master Mold captured Professor X and used a Sentinel-made Cerebro to locate the remaining mutants on Earth, Wolverine and the X-23 clones launched an assault. The clones tore through Sentinels while Wolverine defeated Colonel Moss. He then instructed Laura to lead the others in freeing the prisoners, intervening when they nearly attacked Vanisher. [Foresight (Part 3)].
Designed to be a more efficient, emotionless version of Wolverine, X-23 struggled with the identity forced upon her. Yet, despite her conditioning, traces of her own will and emotions remained, shaping her journey beyond the role she was created to fulfil.
