PERSONAL NOTES OF CHARLES XAVIER
“There are mutants whose gifts elevate them to greatness, and there are those whose abilities, though remarkable, serve only to deepen their suffering. Mortimer Toynbee – known to most as Toad – falls into the latter category.
His mutation grants him extraordinary agility, a prehensile tongue, and an array of physiological adaptations that make him formidable in combat. And yet, these same traits have condemned him to a life of ridicule and rejection. From childhood, Mortimer was abandoned, left to the mercy of an orphanage where his appearance made him a target for cruelty. The scars of his youth run deep, manifesting in an overwhelming need for acceptance – one that has led him down dark paths.
Magneto saw in him not a comrade, but a servant. He exploited Mortimer’s desperation, subjecting him to verbal and physical abuse. Toad endured it all, clinging to the belief that Magneto’s cause would grant him purpose. But Magneto’s disdain was absolute, and when the time came, he discarded Mortimer without hesitation.
Briefly, Mortimer found refuge within the walls of my Institute, serving as a janitor. It was an attempt at stability, a chance to exist outside the shadow of cruelty. But kindness, when offered to one who has known only suffering, can become an obsession. The Scarlet Witch and Husk showed him compassion, and in his fractured mind, that kindness became something more – something unhealthy.
His trauma is profound. The torment of his childhood, the rejection by his peers, the abuse at the hands of Magneto – all of it has left him deeply scarred. He does not fit within the world of humans, nor does he truly belong among mutants. He is caught in between, forever searching for a place that will accept him.
I have tried to reach him, to offer him understanding. But some wounds run too deep.”

Later, Toad was the first villain to ambush the X-Men in the Statue of Liberty. He spat his slime excretion in Jean Grey’s face, and she was only saved from suffocation by Cyclops. Having trapped Storm in an elevator shaft, Toad walked away, thinking her defeated. This mistake cost him dearly, as Storm powered up and electrocuted him through his tongue, sending him soaring out to sea [X-Men].
A younger version of Toad was in Vietnam as part of a mutant team during the Vietnam war and was destined for experimentation at the hands of Bolivar Trask. The mutants, including Toad, were rescued by Mystique and taken to America, where later, Toad saw Magneto’s attack on the President, live on the television [X-Men: Days of Future Past].
