“Roberto da Costa has always burned brightly – sometimes too brightly for his own good. His mutant ability to absorb and channel solar energy grants him incredible strength, but it is his ambition, his passion, that truly defines him.

Born into wealth in Brazil, Roberto was raised with expectations far beyond his years. His father, a powerful businessman, demanded excellence, while his mother, an archaeologist, nurtured his curiosity. But when his mutant powers manifested during a soccer match, his life was forever changed. He was no longer just a rising star – he was a target.

His journey with the New Mutants was one of growth, of learning to temper his impulsive nature with wisdom. He was brash, headstrong, but fiercely loyal. Over time, he evolved, stepping beyond the shadow of his youthful arrogance. He joined X-Force, embracing a more aggressive approach to mutant survival, and later, the Hellfire Club, wielding power in ways few mutants dared.

But Roberto has never been content to follow. He has always sought to lead, to shape the world in his own vision. His tenure as the head of A.I.M. – rebranded as Avengers Idea Mechanics – was proof of that. He took a villainous organization and turned it into something new, something that could serve mutant kind and humanity alike.

Now, as the world shifts once more, Roberto stands at a crossroads. He has been an X-Man, an Avenger, a businessman, a revolutionary. But where does he go from here? Perhaps, like the sun itself, he will rise again, burning away the doubts and forging a future only he can see.”

APPEARANCES ON-SCREEN (Movies)

FIRST APPEARANCE: To Me, My X-Men
VOICED BY: Gui Agustini

Initially captured by the anti-mutant group Friends of Humanity, Roberto is rescued by the X-Men, but remains reluctant to join their ranks [Mutant Liberation Begins]. His scepticism about Xavier’s dream sets him apart from the more idealistic members of the team, but Jubilee’s encouragement helps him reconsider his place among mutants [Motendo].

Sunspot’s powers manifest visually as his body turning black and crackling with energy. While he is wealthy and confident, he struggles with the expectations placed upon him, both as a mutant and as someone with significant resources [Bright Eyes]. Over time, he begins to embrace his abilities and the responsibility that comes with them, slowly integrating into the X-Men’s world. When Magneto offers him sanctuary, he accepts, but in the final battle, he watches as Asteroid M is destroyed, with the X-Men aboard. He remains on Earth with Jubilee, Bishop and Forge determined to continue their dream [Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)].

To be continued!

FIRST APPEARANCE: X-Men: Days of Future Past
OTHER APPEARANCES: The New Mutants
PLAYED BY: Adam Canto (X-Men: Days of Future Past); Henry Zaga (The New Mutants)

A version of Sunspot was a member of the X-Men in the apocalyptic future where Sentinels ruled the world. Part of Kitty’s team, he would distract the Sentinels, usually with his death, until Bishop could escape through time [X-Men: Days of Future Past].

A younger version was seen after the timeline reset, in the Essex Corporation-run facility led by Cecilia Reyes. Convinced they were receiving therapy to join the X-Men, Roberto opened up in sessions about his first use of his power, which killed his girlfriend. When the New Mutant elected to break out of the facility, Sunspot joined them and he left after they had stopped the Demon Bear unleashed by Danielle Moonstar’s mutant powers [The New Mutants].

FIRST APPEARANCE: Growing Pains
VOICED BY: Michael Coleman

Roberto was one of the more powerful New Mutants when they joined the Xavier Institute. He was a good student – when he wanted to be – and had a friendly rivalry with fellow students Berserker and Cannonball. He also worked well with Wolfsbane, as they proved when they saved Dr. McCoy from poachers [Retreat]. He fought with the rest of the X-Men to stop Apocalypse, and would be a great asset to the team in the future [Ascension].
