PERSONAL NOTES OF CHARLES XAVIER
“There are some who call Bobby Drake the heart of the X-Men – not because he has always stood at the centre of battle, nor because he has led armies or dictated policy. His place in history is not marked by grand declarations or wars won, but by something perhaps more vital: resilience.
Robert Louis Drake was born to an unassuming family in Long Island, New York. His mutation—cryo-kinesis, the power to manipulate moisture and transform it into ice – manifested early, his control shaky, his confidence uncertain. A life spent hiding his abilities was all but inevitable until fate intervened. The world changed the day the X-Men were formed, and Bobby – barely more than a boy – was among its first members.
In those early days, he was the youngest of us, the one who never seemed burdened by the weight of the mission. While Scott Summers carried responsibility like a mantle, while Hank McCoy sought to unravel scientific mysteries, Bobby was there with his wit, his warmth, his unrelenting optimism. He did not simply fight alongside the X-Men; he reminded them to live.
But youth does not last forever, and time brought with it the pressures of expectation. Bobby was an Omega-level mutant long before he understood what such power truly meant. His abilities – his potential – rivalled the greatest among us, but the weight of that realization was heavy, and for years, he did not allow himself to grasp its full scope. Fear can be a formidable enemy.
It was not battle that forced Bobby Drake to grow. It was self-acceptance.
Over time, he learned what it meant to wield power – not as a weapon, but as an extension of identity. He stood with the X-Men through some of their greatest trials, fought alongside his brothers and sisters in arms, and when the moment came, he did not back down. There is a story often told about Bobby – how he once froze the entire world in an instant, his power unchecked, his limits unknown. And yet, despite the forces that sought to wield him as a tool of destruction, he remained, at his core, himself.
Few mutants have stood on the precipice of untapped greatness and stepped forward without fear. Fewer still have done so with a joke and a smirk.
Bobby Drake has been called many things – a prankster, an underdog, a fighter. But if history has proven anything, it is that he is far more than these singular definitions. He is, and has always been, one of the greatest mutants of our time.
And what a time it has been.”

X-MEN

FIRST APPEARANCE: Cold Comfort
VOICED BY: Jesse Collins
Bobby Drake had left the X-Men to pursue a normal life as an accountant, alongside his girlfriend Lorna Dane. Settling into normality, Bobby’s world crashed around him when Lorna vanished, the note ‘Kirby Glen’ his only clue.
Discovering a government facility with the same name and believing Lorna to have been kidnapped, Bobby broke into the base. He was apprehended by his former friends in the X-Men, Beast and Cyclops and rejected any teaching Xavier tried to impart on him. Charles tried to contain Bobby, but Jubilee, emphasising with Bobby’s plight, let him escape.
Accompanying him back to Kirby Glen, the pair were captured, but the X-Men arrived to rescue them. A skirmish with the Government team X-Factor began, which only ended when their newest member, Lorna, interrupted and informed Bobby that she had fakes her disappearance, wanting to support mutant rights in her own way.
Hurt by her rejection and unwilling to belong to the X-Men again yet, Bobby left for parts unknown [Cold Comfort]. He was seen on Genosha just before the Sentinel attack and, given his mutants abilities, is likely to have survived [Remember It]. His face was seen on Forge’s wall of potential recruits [Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)].

OTHER APPEARANCES: X2; X-Men: The Last Stand; X-Men: Days of Future Past
PLAYED BY: Shawn Ashmore
Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, begins as a young mutant struggling to understand his abilities and place in the world. Initially a student at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Bobby is introduced as a reserved but kind-hearted individual, forming a close bond with Rogue, who is grappling with her own mutation. His ability to generate and manipulate ice makes him one of the most visually striking mutants, though he initially lacks confidence in his powers [X-Men].
As the conflict between mutants and humanity escalates, Bobby’s role grows significantly. He is forced to confront his past when he returns home, revealing his mutation to his family – only to be met with fear and rejection. This moment solidifies his commitment to the X-Men, proving that his true family lies with those who accept him for who he is [X2].
Later, Bobby has fully embraced his abilities, engaging in battle against the Brotherhood and showcasing his full ice form for the first time, marking his transformation from hesitant student to seasoned warrior [X-Men: The Last Stand].
In the future, Bobby fights alongside the remaining X-Men in a desperate attempt to prevent the extinction of mutant kind. His mastery of his powers is evident as he creates ice slides, shields, and offensive attacks, standing as one of the last defenders against the Sentinels. Despite his bravery, he ultimately falls in battle, a tragic but heroic end. When Logan changes the timeline, Bobby is restored to life [X-Men: Days of Future Past].
X-MEN: EVOLUTION

FIRST APPEARANCE: Growing Pains
VOICED BY: Andrew Francis
Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, is introduced as one of the New Mutants, a younger group of students at the Xavier Institute who train separately from the core X-Men team. Unlike his more serious counterparts, Bobby is carefree, energetic, and always ready to crack a joke, making him the light-hearted prankster of the group. His enthusiasm often leads him into trouble, as he tends to act impulsively without fully considering the consequences.
Despite his playful nature, Bobby is a loyal friend and a capable fighter, quickly mastering his ability to generate and manipulate ice. He can create ice slides for rapid movement, form barriers and weapons, and encase himself in an armoured ice form for added durability. His eagerness to prove himself sometimes results in reckless behaviour, but he always strives to fix his mistakes and protect his teammates.
As his education progresses, Bobby’s skills improve, and he becomes a more reliable member of the team. Though he remains the jokester of the New Mutants, he demonstrates courage and determination, proving that beneath his playful exterior lies a mutant willing to stand up for what’s right. While he never fully integrates into the main X-Men line-up, his presence adds a sense of youthful energy and optimism to the team’s dynamic.

Against his parent’s wishes, Bobby ultimately rejoins the team, bringing his powerful cryokinetic abilities back into the fold. His ability to generate and manipulate ice proves invaluable in battle, allowing him to create ice barriers, projectiles, and slides for rapid movement. Despite his reluctance, he quickly becomes one of Wolverine’s most trusted allies, standing alongside him as the X-Men face threats from Magneto, the Mutant Response Division, and the Sentinels.
