Today, my thoughts dwell on Jubilation Lee, the spirited mutant many of us know fondly as Jubilee. Her journey with the X-Men stands as a testament to courage, resilience, and the bonds forged within our extraordinary family.

I recall her initial appearance vividly. A chance encounter at a shopping mall marked the beginning of her association with our team. She was young, brimming with an energy that bordered on defiance, and possessed a mutant ability that she herself described as “fireworks.” Yet beneath her irreverent demeanor lay an undeniable spark of potential, a heart yearning for connection, and a spirit hungry for purpose. It was no surprise that she quickly became entangled in the lives of Wolverine and the rest of our number. Logan, in particular, took her under his wing. Their relationship, unlikely as it may have seemed to outsiders, grew to embody a kind of familial love. Jubilee became, in essence, his protégé, and in turn, Logan—a man often tormented by his past—found solace in her unyielding optimism and mischievous charm.

As her journey progressed, Jubilee’s path led her to the Generation X team, a group of young mutants coming into their own under the guidance of Emma Frost and Sean Cassidy. Here, she grew not only as a mutant but as a leader, an advocate, and a friend. I watched her navigate the challenges of adolescence and responsibility with a fierce determination that belied her years. Her vibrancy became a cornerstone of the group, an energy that rallied and inspired those around her, even in moments of great peril.

In more recent times, Jubilee’s life has undergone yet another remarkable transformation. She has assumed the role of a mother to Shogo, a young boy who has brought her boundless joy and new depths of compassion. It is fitting that, in the strange way life works for mutants, Shogo occasionally takes the form of a magical dragon—a reflection, perhaps, of the extraordinary nature of our lives and the fantastical paths we tread. Watching Jubilee balance the demands of motherhood with the responsibilities and dangers of mutantkind is an inspiration. She has, in many ways, epitomized the essence of what it means to be an X-Man: to give of oneself wholly for the good of others while cherishing the connections that give life meaning.

As I consider Jubilee’s journey, I am struck by her resilience, her boundless spirit, and the light she brings to all who know her. She has grown from a mischievous mall rat into a hero, a mother, and a guiding force for others. In Jubilee, I see the very heart of what makes our kind extraordinary: the ability to embrace our uniqueness, to forge unbreakable bonds, and to create a world where hope shines brightly against the darkness.

APPEARANCES ON-SCREEN (Movies)

FIRST APPEARANCE: Night of the Sentinels (Part 1)
VOICED BY: Alyson Court (X-Men); Holly Chou (X-Men ’97)

Jubilation Lee, known as Jubilee, was born in 1979 as a Chinese-American foster child. Her early life was marked by time spent in an orphanage, where she learned skills like lockpicking [Slave Island]. Before her mutant powers manifested during puberty, she lived with loving foster parents. However, when her abilities caused her to accidentally melt the family VCR, her foster father reported her to the Mutant Control Agency, believing it was for her safety. This led to a Sentinel tracking her to a mall, where she was rescued by the X-Men and brought to the Xavier Institute. Despite initial resistance, Jubilee became a member of the X-Men, forming a close bond with Wolverine, who became a surrogate father figure and even taught her to drive [Night of the Sentinels (Part 1); Longshot].

Jubilee’s journey with the X-Men included numerous adventures. She was sent to Genosha with Gambit and Storm to investigate rumours of mutant acceptance, only to discover a sinister plot to enslave mutants [Cold Vengeance]. She played a key role in escaping and freeing other prisoners [Slave Island]. She encountered the time-traveller Bishop and faced off against the Sentinel Nimrod [Days of Future Past]. Jubilee also participated in missions to save Senator Kelly and fought against the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Magneto. Her bravery and determination were evident when she helped rescue Kelly from Master Mold’s base, despite initial doubts from Wolverine about her readiness [The Final Decision].

Jubilee’s growth as a character continued as she faced various challenges. She helped Colossus in Russia to stop Omega Red and proved her capability during a cave-in that trapped her and a group of children [Red Dawn; Jubilee’s Fairytale Theatre]. Charles Xavier recognized her potential, calling her the future and a symbol of hope [Graduation Day].

After Xavier left Earth, Jubilee’s story took new turns. She was part of the team’s efforts to rescue Roberto Da Costa from the Friends of Humanity and witnessed Magneto’s surprising rise as the leader of the X-Men following Professor Xavier’s departure [To Me, My X-Men]. One mission took her to Mojoworld, where she and Sunspot faced challenges in a deadly video game scenario. Jubilee’s digital counterpart played a crucial role in their escape [Motendo]. She was with the X-Men when they took on Bastion aboard Asteroid M, but was returned to Earth with Sunspot, where she currently believes the X-Men to be dead [Tolerance is Extinction].

FIRST APPEARANCE: Generation X
OTHER APPEARANCES: X-Men; X2; X-Men: The Last Stand; X-Men: Apocalypse
PLAYED BY: Heather McComb (Generation X); Katrina Florece (X-Men); Kia Wong (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand); Lana Condor (X-Men: Apocalypse)

In the original timeline, Jubilee was a student at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters [X-Men]. During Stryker’s assault on the grounds, Jubilee was one of the mutants taken to Alkali Lake in custody. She was later freed by Nightcrawler [X2]. She also attended Charles Xavier’s memorial service [X-Men: The Last Stand].

When Wolverine changed the timeline, Jubilee was now younger and emerged earlier than before. Befriending Cyclops and Jean Grey on Scott’s first day at Xavier’s the trio (and Kurt Wagner) were missing when the mansion was destroyed by an explosion. She was rendered unconscious when Stryker took the mutants out, but was later seen watching the school being rebuilt [X-Men: Apocalypse].

Another version of Jubilee was seen as a member of the student body of the Massachusetts Branch of the Xavier School, run by Emma Frost and Sean Cassidy. Her powers flared up in public, leading to her arrest. When taken to Xavier’s she became interested in Emma’s former work on the dream machine, which aided the team later when villain Russell Tresh kidnapped close friend Angelo to gain more power. It was Jubilee that Angelo alerted and she was able to rally the team in time [Generation X].

FIRST APPEARANCE: Growing Pains
VOICED BY: Chiara Zanni

Jubilee was among the new class of ‘New Mutants’, added to the student body as Xavier’s school gained more additions [Growing Pains]. Unfortunately, Jubilee was also one of the youngest, as as a precaution, her and Wolfsbane were removed from campus for their own safety [Mainstream]. She would one day return [Ascension].
