Proteus (Part 1) takes viewers on a wild ride as the X-Men encounter one of their most challenging adversaries yet. The episode introduces Proteus, a powerful mutant with reality-warping abilities, whose emergence sends shockwaves through the team. But it’s not just Proteus’s powers that make this episode compelling; it’s the intricate family dynamics that come into play. Proteus, also known as Kevin MacTaggert, is the estranged son of Moira MacTaggert, a brilliant geneticist and long-time ally of the X-Men. This familial connection adds layers of emotional complexity as Moira grapples with the return of her son, whose powers are dangerously unstable.
As Proteus wreaks havoc, the X-Men are forced to confront their own views on family and responsibility. The team must balance their duty to protect the public with their desire to support Moira, who is torn between her love for her son and the need to stop him. The tension is palpable as Moira struggles with guilt and regret over past decisions, all while trying to reach Kevin and help him gain control over his abilities. These familial ties and emotional struggles add depth to the action-packed storyline, highlighting the personal stakes involved…
On Muir Island, Moira MacTaggert and Banshee observe Proteus in his containment cell, held in place by laser beams that help the mutant control his powers, transforming him from an energy being into his human form. However, Proteus soon breaks free from his cell, possessing Banshee’s body as Moira tries in vain to reason with him. Reality begins to warp around them as Proteus makes his escape from the Muir Island facility.
The X-Men receive a distress signal from Moira and quickly board the Blackbird, flying to Muir Island off the coast of Scotland. During the flight, Professor X shares some personal history with his students, revealing his past engagement to Moira and the reasons she broke it off. He also recounts his subsequent relationship with Amelia Voght during his stay at the hospital where he lost the use of his legs. Meanwhile, Moira had married and divorced Joseph MacTaggert, giving birth to Kevin, who would become Proteus, while Xavier founded the X-Men.
Upon landing on Muir Island, Moira shows the team a videotape of Proteus’s escape and warns them of his dangerous powers, including reality-warping and telepathy. The X-Men split up to find Proteus while Professor X stays behind to catch up with Moira, inquiring about Joseph’s recent activities. He learns that Joseph is now a politician, running for election in Scotland.
Proteus continues his rampage, possessing bodies and leaving a trail of chaos as he makes his way to the mainland, searching for his father. The X-Men eventually catch up with him, leading to an intense battle. Proteus summons creatures to fight them, with Rogue battling miniature versions of herself, Beast facing off against a Bigfoot-like creature, and Wolverine‘s claws turning into snakes and his body being torn in half. Despite their best efforts, Proteus overpowers the X-Men, leaving them defeated.

Morph makes a quick cameo in the medical bay at the start of the episode.
The story for the two-parter is adapted from Uncanny X-Men #125-128. The mystery of what was behind the ‘Mutant X’ door was kickstarted when Magneto accidentally opened it in Uncanny X-Men #104. In the comics, Kevin’s possession results in death, which is toned down for the series’ target audience.
Flashbacks to Xavier and Moira’s romance come from Uncanny X-Men #117.
Proteus’ initial victim that he uses appears to be based on bigoted captain Angus MacWhirter, who was also the way he escaped Muir Isle in Uncanny X-Men #119.

We see a flashback explaining Charles and Moira’s romance, their break-up and their subsequent relationships, including Amelia Voght (Sanctuary) and Banshee (The Dark Shroud).
The bar that Proteus visits is the same bar from season one, seen in The Cure and Come the Apocalypse. It seems to welcome mutants as the alien TechNet from Excalibur can be seen in the crowd. Moira owns a bar on Muir Island called ‘The Chalk and Cheese’. Judging from the panels in Excalibur #91, this could be it.
The reality-bending attack on Wolverine is straight from the comic book story. The attack affects Wolverine until he goes to Japan in Lotus and the Steel.
