“Moira MacTaggert has been one of my closest allies, a brilliant geneticist, and a steadfast believer in the dream of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. Her contributions to mutant research have been invaluable, shaping our understanding of the X-gene and providing sanctuary for those who had nowhere else to turn.

From the moment I met her at Oxford, I knew she was extraordinary. Her mind was sharp, her convictions unwavering. Though our paths diverged, she remained a vital part of the mutant cause, establishing the Muir Island Research Facility – a haven for scientific discovery and, at times, a refuge for mutants in need.

Moira’s work has often placed her in danger. Her involvement with the X-Men has made her a target, and she has suffered greatly because of it. The tragedy of Proteus, her own son, was a wound that never fully healed. His reality-warping abilities made him one of the most dangerous mutants we had ever encountered, and the pain of losing him weighed heavily on her. Yet, even in grief, she continued her work, refusing to let sorrow define her.

She has fought alongside us, not with powers, but with intellect and determination. She has stood against threats like the Legacy Virus, dedicating herself to finding a cure when others saw only despair. She has been a mentor, a scientist, and, above all, a friend.

Moira MacTaggert is proof that one does not need to be a mutant to fight for mutant kind. Her contributions have shaped the course of our history, and though she has faced loss and hardship, she has never wavered in her commitment to the dream.”

APPEARANCES ON-SCREEN (Movies)

FIRST APPEARANCE: The Cure
VOICED BY: Lally Cadeau (X-Men); Martha Marion (X-Men ’97)

Moira first appeared as a trusted confidante of Professor Charles Xavier, their relationship marked by deep mutual respect and a shared vision for peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans [The Cure]. Her research into mutant genetics was ground breaking, particularly in her efforts to help her son, Kevin MacTaggert, whose reality-warping abilities made him one of the most dangerous mutants alive [Proteus (Part 1)].

Her facility on Muir Island became a refuge for mutants in need, including Banshee, whom she was romantically involved with [The Dark Shroud; Cry of the Banshee]. However, her work often placed her in danger, as seen when Phalanx took control of Muir Island [The Phalanx Covenant (Part 2)]. Even her scientific knowledge was unable to save Charles’ life after Gyrich’s assassination attempt [Graduation Day].

Moira’s role expands as she becomes more deeply involved in the political and scientific struggles surrounding mutant kind. She is elected to the Interim Council of Genosha, working alongside other leaders to establish a safe haven for mutants. Tragically, she is killed during the Sentinel attacks on Genosha, marking one of the most devastating losses in mutant history [Remember It].

FIRST APPEARANCE: X-Men: The Last Stand
OTHER APPEARANCES: X-Men: First Class; X-Men: Apocalypse
PLAYED BY: Olivia Williams (X-Men: The Last Stand); Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class; X-Men: Apocalypse)

Moira is introduced as a scientist specializing in mutant genetics and is seen caring for Charles Xavier’s comatose body after his apparent death. She is significant in setting up the idea that Xavier’s consciousness may have survived [X-Men: The Last Stand].

In the past, at some point before and after the timeline changed, Moira had been a part of Charles Xavier’s younger days. As a CIA operative, she is one of the first humans to actively investigate mutant activity, leading her to discover Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club. Seeking help, she recruits Charles Xavier, forming an early alliance between the government and the X-Men.

Moira plays a crucial role in assembling the first generation of X-Men, working alongside Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) to train young mutants. She witnesses the growing divide between Xavier and Magneto, ultimately failing to prevent Erik from forming the Brotherhood of Mutants [X-Men: First Class].

Having had her memories of the X-Men erased by Xavier years prior, she is unaware of her past involvement with them. However, she is drawn back into their world when she uncovers the resurrection of Apocalypse, an ancient mutant seeking to reshape the world. Moira aids the X-Men in their battle against Apocalypse, gradually regaining fragments of her erased memories. Her relationship with Xavier remains complex, balancing her duty as a government agent with her growing understanding of mutant kind [X-Men: Apocalypse].

“Moira MacTaggert was once my closest ally, a brilliant geneticist, and a steadfast believer in the dream of peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. But that was before I learned the truth – before I understood the full scope of her existence.

Moira is not merely a scientist. She is a mutant, one whose power transcends time itself. Her ability to reincarnate upon death, retaining the memories of her past lives, makes her one of the most dangerous and influential figures in mutant history. She has lived through countless timelines, witnessing the rise and fall of mutant kind, each failure shaping her understanding of what must be done to ensure our survival.

It was Moira’s knowledge – her accumulated experience across lifetimes – that led to the creation of Krakoa. She knew that peaceful integration with humanity would always end in destruction. She had seen it happen before, again and again. And so, she guided us toward a new path, one where mutants would stand together, not as individuals scattered across the world, but as a unified nation.

Yet, for all her brilliance, Moira has always been a woman of secrets. She kept her true nature hidden for decades, even from me. And when the tides of Krakoa shifted, so did her allegiance. Once a silent architect of our future, she became something else entirely – a traitor to the very people she sought to protect.

Her betrayal was not born of malice, but of fear. She believed that mutant kind’s survival required control, that free will was a threat to our existence. In her desperation, she turned against us, aligning herself with forces that sought to dismantle everything we had built.

Moira MacTaggert is no longer the woman I once knew. She is no longer the ally I trusted. But she is still a force to be reckoned with, a mind that has shaped the course of mutant history more than any other. Whether she will find redemption or remain a threat is yet to be seen. But one thing is certain – Moira X will never be forgotten.”
